Winters Warmth

Winters Warmth is a fine art photograph of the iconic Dream Lake mid-winter during a cool clear sunrise above the Rocky Mountains. I was headed to climb the snowy Hallets Peak early one morning so I packed my things and took off from Boulder, Colorado well before the dawn. Arriving at an empty Bear Lake parking lot I got my bag together with the necessary equipment for a day of climbing and headed off into the dark. Luckily for me, I would be walking by the iconic Dream Lake on my way to the objective for the morning and was greeted by the sun slowly rising over the Rockies with a full moon hanging between the two summits. I quickly got my camera out and started framing my image. I knew I didn’t have long before the moon would move from its central location and the image would be ruined.

The contrast between the warmth of the sun on the ridge and the cold shadow of the mountain made for such a beautiful photograph I couldn’t believe it. It was highlighting just how stunning a silent morning in the wintry mountains can be, and just how alluring the sun-soaked snow can look after trudging through the cold, silent, dark morning.
